Short description of the tour

Discover the magic of Tarragona with our exciting Free Tour! Join us on an unforgettable journey through the history and beauty of this charming Mediterranean city as we explore its most emblematic corners. Did you know that Tarraco was the first city founded by the Romans on the Iberian Peninsula? Discover with us the keys to one of the most extensive archaeological sites of Roman Hispania and its close relationship with Augustus, the first Roman emperor. But Tarragona is much more, because its upper part maintains the medieval atmosphere of past centuries and its rich gastronomy (and excellent views) remind us that we are by the sea, in the heart of the Costa Dorada. Itinerary

We’ll meet at the Portal del Roser to start our adventure next to the iconic Tarragona city wall, the oldest construction of Roman Tarraco and one of its symbols.

We’ll stroll through the picturesque streets of Cavallers and Major, where you’ll be able to admire the medieval architecture and feel the vibrant atmosphere of the city. Our route will lead us to the steps leading to the Pla de la Seu, in the Part Alta of Tarragona, where we will be welcomed by the majestic Cathedral of Santa Tecla, built on Roman, Visigoth and Arab sites and whose Gothic rose window will impress you. Nearby awaits us the historic Forum Square, the ancient centre of Roman social and political life, of which we will be able to see marvellous vestiges.

But there is still much more to come, as we will approach the National Archaeological Museum and stop before the imposing Torre del Pretorio or King’s Castle, a fortress where we will find the statue of a mythical figure. Do you want to meet Augustus? The first Roman emperor will welcome us overlooking the sea to tell us about the splendour of the past of this magnificent city.

Can you imagine what the exciting chariot races were like? We will head towards the Roman Circus, an architectural complex that eventually became embedded in the city centre of Tarragona, making it one of the best preserved in the world.

From here our steps will take us to UNESCO Square, located at a point that connects the upper part and the maritime quarter. This place commemorates the declaration of the archaeological site of Tarraco as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, which includes a total of fourteen protected enclaves!

It’s getting close to the end of the visit, so we’ll have to do it in style. We will enter the Miracle Park, a Roman garden terraced with native Mediterranean plants and which acts as a prelude to the Amphitheatre, an impressive enclosure built near the sea where all kinds of spectacles were held, such as gladiator fights.

Finally, we will say goodbye from the Balcony of the Mediterranean, a very special viewpoint for the people of Tarragona, located at the end of the Rambla Nova, from which you can enjoy a privileged panoramic view of the Mare Nostrum, the port and the amphitheatre. The perfect place to recommend you the best places to taste the rich gastronomy of the city, a mixture of fresh fish and local agricultural products, to combine with excellent wines or the typical vermouth as an aperitif.
